have you ever really loved a song, listen to it a million times without ever really knowing the lyrics (and making up your own), and then going back to it later on and reading the correct lyrics?
well, here’s what just happened to me: i fell in LOVE with Arcade Fire’s “In the Backseat”. i think it’s an exceptionally beautiful song. Regine has this way of singing that i absolutely love. she’s not an amazing singer, and i think that’s what i like about her. she’s no whitney houston or mariah carey…but she definitely can belt out a tune.
with this song in particular, i was’t ever really sure what she was singing, and to me, it felt like it was this really heartfelt song with an amazing ending by Regine. then i read the lyrics of the chorus.
In the night
I’ve been learning to drive
My whole life
I’ve been learning…”
so, this incredibly beautiful song now has a whole new meaning to it.
this song is about Regine’s mother, Alice, who had died during the recording of this album (Funeral). and apparently, the whole album is also fused with moments from the other members’ personal lives as well, and their siblings deaths during the recording of this album.
now that i know the correct lyrics, it’s definitely changed my listening experience from now on. it is completely and utterly heartfelt. and tragic. and uplifting. all at the same time.
I just love how Regine, and the rest of The Arcade Fire, can do that all in mere minutes of a song.
and that is why they are the best band in the world.
